When you hear Ubi, it perhaps is synonymous with ulu, for it used to be a remote place with nothing much going on except for the industrial buildings and a few nondescript cafes.
Well, not anymore. If you just know where to go, you’ll gasp eureka! to discover these 5 hidden food gems that serve the most pleasing and exciting food in the area. Let’s take a look.
Mr. Lor bak
This modest stall tucked away at 350 Ubi Avenue 1 is run by a fourth-generation hawkerpreneur. The Braised Pork Rice at $3.50 is a hefty serving of rice, extremely tender and flavorful lor bak, black fungus, and a braised egg. We can tell that the meat was slow-braised to perfection. For its price and quality, it’s a hands-down winner.
Catch them from Monday – Saturday, 11:00 am – 7:00 pm, and Sunday from 12:00 pm – 7:00 pm.
Mei Mei Roast
Boasting a five-star rating on Facebook reviews, Mei Mei Roast at block 3024 Ubi 1, is a force in duck roasting. With over 30 years of roasted meat expertise, their gracious roast duck has a robust smokiness and deep colour on fatty skin, while the tender meat is pleasantly gamey. Half of the roasted duck is at $25 and could satisfy 2-3 persons (except when one is famished).
The humble stall is open from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm daily.
Crispy Roti Prata
Needless to say, their specialty Roti Prata is awesomely crispy. Handmade from scratch daily and is always sold-out at the end of the operation. The plain prata is at $0.80, but our recommendation goes to the egg and cheese prata at $2.00.
Get your fulfilling bite from 6:00 am – 65:00 pm daily except on Mondays, located at the same building as Mr. Lorbak.
Tai Seng Fish Soup
Lunchtime is crazy, for it would take you more than an hour to queue at this stall near Ubi MRT. The very popular Sliced fish Soup is a light meal of subtly sweet thick slices of fish, fried or boiled, and seafood or tom yum soup options.
We suggest it paired with bee hoon or mee sua for a more hearty meal. You can enjoy a cup bowl of this worth-the-wait soup for only $4.50, serving from Monday – Thursday 9:00 am – 4:00 pm, Friday 9:30 am – 3:00 pm, and Saturday 10:30 am – 2:30 pm.
Niu Zou La Mian
Awestruck by the gracefully hand-pulled noodles made upon order, Niu Zou La Mian is unforgettable for its authentic Chinese technique and flavors and its origin.
Run by a Muslim Chinese from Gan Su, China, their specialty Halal la mian is not to be missed. We gave a two-thumbs-up for their signature Lan Zhou Beef Ramen ($5) of flavorsome beefy broth, tender slices of beef brisket, and a generous serving of springy noodles in a heartbeat.
Their daily operation from Monday to Sunday, 11:00 am – 11:00 pm, is just another reason to love this restaurant. Visit them at Block 325, Ubi Avenue 1, Food Point.
